Hi Gary, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I hail from the charming town of Falkirk, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Scotland, where I took my first breaths before finding my roots in the quaint enclave of Bo’ness. Bo’ness isn’t just a place on the map for me; it’s the very essence of my upbringing, the backdrop against which my journey in the performing arts began to unfold.
As a wide-eyed youngster, I embarked on my theatrical odyssey by gracing the stages of school nativity plays, and from those humble beginnings, my passion for performance was ignited. It was my dear mother, Carol, who recognized this spark within me and graciously enrolled me in stage school, nurturing my talents and fueling my aspirations.
Our family’s journey then led us to County Armagh in the enchanting landscapes of Northern Ireland. Here, amidst the welcoming embrace of the City of Armagh High School, I found myself thrust into the limelight, portraying iconic characters like Oliver in the timeless classic “Oliver the Musical” and the suave Kenikie in the electrifying “Grease the Musical.”
Venturing further into the realm of professional theater, I honed my craft at the prestigious National Stage School, where I embarked on a thrilling national tour as the enigmatic Red Coat in the captivating production of “Black 47, A New Musical.” Meanwhile, my academic pursuits at the Southern Regional College provided fertile ground for my creative endeavors, culminating in the birth of my inaugural short film, “2Late,” a project that marked the inception of my burgeoning career behind the camera.
Under the guidance of esteemed director Philip Henry, I embraced the challenge of embodying the complex character of John in the compelling narrative of “Love Bites,” further solidifying my love affair with the art of acting. It was during this transformative period that fate intervened, propelling me into the spotlight once more as I secured the coveted role of Healtor Frey in the epic saga of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”
Yet, as the tides of opportunity ebbed and flowed, my heart yearned to return to the embrace of my Scottish homeland. Thus, my family and I made the pilgrimage back to Scotland, where I embarked on a new chapter in my artistic journey. Founding GAW Films, in collaboration with DP Productions, we embarked on the ambitious endeavor of creating “RAGE,” a cinematic masterpiece that garnered accolades aplenty, including prestigious awards for Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Producer.
In the wake of our triumph, GAW Films underwent a renaissance, emerging anew as Nevis Studios, a beacon of creativity and innovation in the Scottish film industry. As I stand at the threshold of tomorrow, I am filled with boundless gratitude for the myriad experiences that have shaped me, and with eager anticipation, I await the next chapter in this ever-unfolding narrative of life, art, and adventure.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Throughout my formative years in school, I encountered numerous challenges, particularly grappling with the diagnosis of ADHD. The struggle to maintain focus and absorb knowledge compounded with the additional burden of facing relentless bullying. These trials tested my resilience and resolve, leaving an indelible mark on my journey to self-discovery.
Amidst the tumult of adversity, I discovered solace and strength in my faith, which became a guiding light illuminating the path towards personal growth and empowerment. Armed with newfound determination, I embarked on a journey of self-actualization, forging my identity as an independent individual.
No longer willing to succumb to the shadows of insecurity, I began to assert myself, bravely confronting the bullies and reclaiming my sense of agency. It was through this process of self-assertion that I unearthed my true calling – the art of storytelling.
With an innate gift for weaving narratives and bringing characters to life, I found sanctuary in the world of creative expression. Each story became a testament to my resilience, a reflection of my innermost struggles and triumphs.
As I navigated the turbulent waters of adolescence, I continued to hone my craft, honing my skills as a storyteller and performer. Every character I portrayed served as a conduit for self-expression, a vehicle through which I could explore the depths of my own psyche and connect with others on a profound level.
In embracing my creative talents, I discovered a sense of purpose and fulfillment that transcended the limitations of my past. With each new role and narrative, I embarked on a voyage of self-discovery, unearthing hidden facets of my identity and embracing the full spectrum of human experience.
Though the road was fraught with obstacles, I emerged stronger and more resilient, a testament to the transformative power of faith, perseverance, and self-belief.
